about
secondpracticepublishers@gmail.com
second practice is a collaborative research & publishing practice by Fatima Hussain, Abeerah Zahid and Ayesha Kamal Khan that brings together their individual interests; critical inquiry into postcolonial geographies, tensions of polarity and displacement within urban and diasporic contexts and participatory ways of disseminating knowledge by exploring trans-disciplinary methodologies in artistic practice. By becoming a counterpart to their individual practice, second practice adopts distance and offers a rather unguarded lens to view, comment and respond to their primary practice by drawing out considered positions in formats predisposed to sharing and circulation.
In the recent past, they showed a short-film Burden Of The Body Is Directly Proportional To Dilation Of Time at the Istanbul Biennale 2022 as part of Topological Atlas Project’s research on migrant narratives. second practice also received the South-South fellowship from Living Arts International in 2022. In 2019 they did a year-long research project ‘Access Audience / Audience Access’ supported by LBF-AAN, the project acquired the format of a live archive and a publication in response to locating audiences for contemporary arts in Pakistan. second practice is currently developing their project The Artist As Translator and a sound dictionary by locating newer formats of recording sound that move beyond the inquiries of recording technologies to be able to re/present sonorous enculturated worlds inhabited by people.
They have collaborated on various projects previously that have been shown at Richmix UK, Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq Lahore and at the University of Toronto (UofT). All three have taught at the Department of Fine arts at National College of Arts and have participated in various residencies namely Independent Curators International NY in 2012, Metropolis at Habib University Karachi in 2015, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2015 and the Whitney Independent Study Program NY in 2022 etc. They have been working together since 2011 on various projects and formally came together as Second Practice in 2018.
